This amazing painting by PlantMonster helps us visualize the characters of “The Open Boat.” Inspired by the story itself, we see the oiler, correspondent, cook, and captain inside their boat. The treacherous sea props the small dingy almost vertically! Notice the Oiler and Correspondent, the two characters responsible for rowing the vessel, are painted almost identically. One rows, the other sleeps- can you tell them apart?
This formal portrait of Stephen Crane was taken in Washington D.C. sometime during 1896. The photo is public domain- due to its age, it has is no copyrights. This particular version of the photo is from Wikipedia.

This photo, created by Mackeson, was inspired by a line in “The Open Boat” - “And all the men knew the colors of the sea.” While I had pictured the ocean as appearing more subdued in color, Mackeson had portrayed it in beautiful shades of lavender, blue, and green. The blurriness of the photo may represent the surreal isolation the four men felt alone in the sea.

This is how I pictured the lighthouse the four men spotted at Mosquito inlet. Although, since they were far from shore, its light appeared to them as only a pin. Surely if they were able to get closer the scene would have looked similar- the beautiful gold and orange sky symbolizing their safe return. Thanks to Farl for this photo.

Here is a lighthouse that stands right in our backyard! This peaceful image of the Cape May lighthouse was taken by CanonGrl97. Something about the photo gives it a very light, almost surreal, feeling. Beautiful work.
